Peter-Jan Wagemans is artistic director of the DoelenEnsemble and in honour of his 60th birthday his beautifully written string quartets have been programmed in one concert together with two other Dutch composers. Common themes in the work of Wagemans are ‘children’ and ‘angels’. Mystical forces move in the background of these works without relating themselves to one particular belief or philosophical work. In the works of the other two Dutch composers on the program the string quartet is complemented with a clarinet. This program is an attractive display of the compositions of Wagemans and proof that chamber music in the Netherlands is still thriving!
