Concerts 11/12   America

America elusive expressionistic minimalistic

In this second program of chamber music the DoelenEnsemble will perform works of three captivating American composers, spanning approximately a century of music. Ornstein, Antheil and Adams take the listener on a gallery expedition of beautifully threadlike sounds, lyrical lines and minimalistic pieces. The often elusive and lyrical character of Leo Ornstein’s piano music clearly establishes itself in his Suicide in an Airplane and Three Moods. In the Sonata for Violin and Piano of his fellow countryman and ‘ bad boy of music’ George Antheil the composer seeks the boundaries of musical expression in favour of conformism. John Adams’ minimalistic style is by contrast full of strong harmonic lines.
