Central to this production are the texts of the French poet Stéphane Mallarmé. In an attempt to understand the grief he experienced at the death of his son, Mallarmé wrote the Tombeau d’Anatole. Mahler would do the same, prophetically so, for his Maria Anna would die unexpectedly two years after his Kindertotenlieder was premièred. A baritone, an actor a small ensemble and electronic music are the medians on which these rather heavy thoughts are carried. Not easily digestible but of a deeply affecting beauty.
